Getting around SOPA

Firstly, I am not going to go into a huge thing about the bill and what it does and why it's bad. But the end note is that it is bad. The real pirates are the ones who know how to get around these preventative measures anyway. It's only creating an even larger gap between those who have the skills and those that don't.

I've taken the liberaty to list a bunch of IP addresses of popular file sharing sites. If I have missed any, you can easily look them up yourselves before the law come into effect here. Simply type it into your browser and you're there.

The IP address of www.thepiratebay.org is 194.71.107.15

The IP address of www.mininova.org is 80.94.76.5

The IP address of www.isohunt.com is 208.95.173.130

The IP address of www.4chan.org is 199.27.135.129

The IP address of www.youtube.com is 209.85.148.93

The IP address of www.blogger.com is 74.125.39.191
(Oh teh noes, my blog!)

The IP address of www.facebook.com is 69.171.224.11

The IP address of www.flickr.com is 68.142.214.24

The IP address of www.vimeo.com is 74.113.233.128

  1. also, you can find the IP address of any site by opening up Command Prompt (cmd.exe). Just enter "ping www.google.com" no quotes. hopefully we wont need to do this. Also I am not sure if this will work if the site is already blacklisted, so do it now.

  2. @Chris: Very true. It won't work after the blacklist though. Blacklisting means the domain name (e.g. www.google.com) is removed from the DNS servers (the things that translate domain names into the IP addresses). I'm not sure how long a blacklisted site will bother to stay running after blacklist though...

  6. cmd.exe wont work because it makes the request through you DNS server. the better solution would be to use an out of the US DNS server. And a vpn or proxy server because your ISP may block connections to cretin IP addresses. If you use VPN your ISP wont be able to block you. But i doubt thius law will pass!!

  8. When you make a request to a webserver, you browser sends the DNS name along with the request. The webserver can then serve different pages depending on what DNS name you used. This allows multiple sites to be served from the same IP address. When you hit the youtube.com IP address, your browser doesn't send the DNS name youtube.com, so the webserver servers content from google.com. To correct this locally, you must edit your hosts file. The hosts file acts as a local DNS. You can google how to do it on various OSs.

  10. Cheers to rcorsaro for that info.

As a note: the cmd thing will work until SOPA or some equivalent come into affect. Same for the website I had mentioned in my post, as it uses the same method.
